One of the advantages of HF radio is that it is largely a free-to-air service. Once you have purchased the equipment there are minimal on-going costs. You will usually need some form of licence to use a HF radio, either for outback services eg RFDS or as a member of a club which owns the station licences to allow you to transmit on their channels. Radio Specialists as accredited radio frequency assigners can also arrange licensing for private HF channel users. There are annual government licence fees for this. HF radio captures the sprit of adventure and can be a lot of fun for travellers as well as for serious corporate users.

There are several ways you can set up a mobile HF radio depending on your requirements. You can purchase a complete package with an auto-tune antenna. This is convenient and means the antenna tunes to the required frequency as you change channels. Or purchase the radio on its own and an aftermarket multi-tapped whip antenna or our Hustler mobile whips tuned for VKS737. This means you will have the inconvenience of stopping and selecting the frequency tap on the antenna to match the channel chosen in the radio, or change resonators, however there are usually day and night frequencies so you may only need to change it a couple of times a day for either. For a cost effective solution it can be a good trade-off. Generally high frequencies during the day, lower frequencies at night. Why ? Because parts of the ionosphere are more dense during the day and absorb the lower frequencies. Which frequencies, for a given distance, and when ? Click here
Why do you need to tune the antenna ? Because the transmitter in the radio needs to see the correct impedance load it was designed for (usually 50 ohms) so that it can dump full power into the antenna for you to get the maximum radiated signal out. What about receiving? Not as critical, as a piece of short wire will usually pick up radio signals anyway, but a tuned antenna will give the best signal strength.

You can use our Hustler mobile antennas on VKS737 and RFDS frequencies. They are used by the amateur radio fraternity and they know how well they work ! Generally one antenna resonator per frequency band is required. For example we supply the RM-40 tuned to VKS737 on 8022 kHz and the RM-60 tuned to VKS737 on 5455 kHz.
You can be up and running with a HF radio on 8022 kHz, which is used most of the time anyway, at a very moderate cost for a RM-40/VKS starter kit at $209.80.
You use the base mount and spring below and a white mast which is fitted with a resonator and whip for the required band. Total antenna height approx 8' (2.4m).
Compared to multi-tapped whips these antennas win hands down in performance. Looking good now isn't it !!!

Ball Mount
The C-32 is an insulated base mount for the Hustler HF Mobile System. Combine this with the C-30 heavy duty spring to mount the MO-3 mast.
The RSS-2 spring may be used for alternate mounting where the C-32 is used by itself and the RSS-2 is mounted between the MO-3 mast and the RM-10 etc resonators.
The springs have a braided centre pigtail connecting both ends of the spring to ensure direct contact between them and prevent detuning at highway speeds.

If you need to check your transmitter power and antenna these HF meters below at $99.95 are exceptional value.
When checking your HF SSB transmitter you will know it is modulating when you talk into the mic, when you do a transmitter power test. Why ?
Because SSB signals are all "talk power". You are seeing the single sideband (SSB) modulation, because that is what is being transmitted on its own. There is no wasted power like there is in an AM carrier signal.
At this price you can keep one of these HF meters handy and check your radio transmitter power and your antenna VSWR.
Use it for your 27 MHz marine, and your VHF marine as well !!!!
