For poor signal strength areas, or when trying to pull a low power TV station out of the noise (eg reception of a community TV broadcaster) a masthead amplifier can usually improve your reception. Why? Because the cable loss between your antenna and TV set has increased the noise figure of your receiving system. If you have a 20 metre cable run of RG6 from the antenna to the TV set, at UHF TV channel frequencies it amounts to around 4dB loss in the signal between the antenna and the TV set. The signal going into the TV set is then 4dB buried into the noise so you can never retrieve it with an amplifier at the TV set end. You need to boost the signal level before it goes into the cable and gets attenuated by the cable. But doesn't the noise get attenuated as well, you say? Unfortunately no. Because it is thermal noise at the input to the TV set and not external noise coming into the antenna. So just the signal is attenuated.

Mount this near the TV set, plug the antenna cable into one jack and the TV into the other. The supply puts DC on the cable to the antenna to power the masthead amp. The TV set is DC isolated. Only the incoming boosted signal is passed to the TV set.
