Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz WIRELESS LAN
2.4GHz Wireless LAN FAQs
Q: How much power am I permitted to radiate at the antenna in a 2.4 GHz WLAN ? A: 4 watts (36dBm) EIRP when using digital modulation eg 802.11b and 802.11g
Q: What is dBm ? A: Power level relative to the reference of one milliwatt, and expressed in dB dBm = 10 log P1/P2 where P1 is the power level and P2 = 1 milliwatt (mW) = 0.001 watt So, 10 log 4/0.001 = 36dBm EIRP is the maximum power you can radiate.
Q: What is EIRP ? A: Effective Isotropic (theoretical point source) Radiating Power You could run 4 watts into a point source antenna with a radiation pattern like a sphere (except it is only theoretical and doesn't exist), or you could run 100mW into a 16dBi gain antenna (40 times the power) in a given direction. The radiated energy level at the receiving point some distance away would be the same. It means whatever combination of transmitter power and antenna gain you use you cannot exceed the 4 watts that would be effectively radiated from the point source.
A simple dipole has 2.15dB directional gain broadside with nulls on its ends. 0dBd = 2.15dBi
Q: How do I calculate how much antenna gain I can use then ? A: Your modem is typically 20dBm (100 mW) output power. System gain can therefore be 36 - 20 = 16 dB If you had no cable loss you could run an antenna with 16 dBi gain If you have 1dB cable/connector loss you can use an antenna with 17dBi gain. Use our 2400SPL4 with 15dBi gain it will provide an excellent result.
Q: Can I use a booster amplifier and is there any advantage ? A: High gain antennas have a narrow beamwidth. For short range broad coverage use a low gain antenna with broad beamwidth and make up the difference with a booster eg 10dB. 20dBm modem + 10dB booster = 30dBm (1 watt), EIRP permitted is 36dBm. Therefore antenna gain can be 36 - 30 = 6dBi gain. If cable/connector loss is 1dB antenna gain can be 7dBi. Use our 2400AT6 with 6dBi gain it will provide an excellent result.
Q: What sort of cable should I use ? A: Keep cable loss to a minimum or it is added to the noise figure of the receiver. Good engineering practice is 1dB (or less) cable loss. We sell RU400 cables with connectors fitted, in cut lengths. For long cable runs we can supply half inch heliax eg LDF4-50 and similar.
