2000SPL6 test set up. Adelaide, southern suburbs, looking north over the city. Toshiba Satellite laptop. Huawei E160 USB modem. 10dB step attenuator.
Conclusions: Speed is quite good with wireless modems and would be better than ADSL in many cases which typically runs at around 1500 kbps. Speed depends to a degree on the signal strength. The modem without an antenna cable plugged in gave -85dBm and good speed but that was outside the house. Inside the house speed was around 1000 kbps and dropped back to 900 MHz GPRS sometimes. If it drops out of 3G (blue light) back to GPRS (green light) the performance is lame and typically that of old dial up speed - 56kbps. Usually the modem will idle in 3G WCDMA (dark blue light) and automatically step to 3.5G HSDPA (light blue light) on downloads. Try to avoid drop back to 2G (green light) by investing in an antenna. After all, you want something that works. |
2000SPL4 test set up. Adelaide, southern suburbs, looking north over the city. Toshiba Satellite laptop. Huawei E160 USB modem. 10dB step attenuator.
Conclusions: The 2000SPL4 was tested slightly later in the morning. Speed a bit slower. Given that a fairly basic test set up was used with off-air signals and there is some experimental error, fading, and different network loadings, the antenna gains correlate roughly, and the attenuator steps correlate roughly with the signal strength indicator RSSI. The 2000SPL4 performs well for a compact parabolic grid antenna. If you want to invest in a bit more fade margin then the 2000SPL6 will do nicely.
Now run the speed test below on your modem. |

MOBILE WIRELESS BROADBAND - PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATIONS OR DIY
Huge range of grid-pack antennas and yagis available For high speed broadband 3G and 4G For wireless phone For cell phone fringe reception 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1.8 GHz, 2.1 GHz for Virgin, Vodafone, Telstra, Optus, 3 Combine a grid-pack 2.1 GHz and a yagi 900 MHz as shown here, with one of our diplexers and get 2.1 GHz broadband and 900 MHz GSM telephone. Three combinations possible: 1. Highest Gain: 600mm 2100 MHz grid-pack (18.5dBi) + 12 element 900 MHz yagi (12dBi) 2. High Gain: 400mm 2100 grid-pack (13.5dBi) + 5 element 900 MHz yagi (9dBi) 3. Medium Gain: LPDA 2100 MHz 11dBi + 9.5dBi 900 MHz The difference in gains between 900MHz and 2100MHz in combination 1, or combination 2, is equal to the aperture path loss 20 log 2100/900 = 7dB. Therefore the twin antenna systems (one grid-pack and one yagi) are matched.
If you just want 2.1 GHz 3G phone, and 3.5G UMTS/HSDPA internet broadband, (eg Adelaide metro) then all you need is a 2.1 GHz antenna. 900 MHz antennas give drop back capability to 2G GSM phone and 2.5G GPRS internet data. Optus Yes G (3G) now 900 MHz rural areas.
Customers typically report that with our antennas and cables they go from 1. 1 or 2 bars GPRS (inside house) to 4 bars HSDPA with TDJ-2000SPL4 2. -92dBm (inside house) to -50dBm rock solid signal with TDJ-2000SPL6
For Telstra Next G HSDPA (Telstra's version of 3G which is on 850 MHz) use our 850 MHz yagis and grid-pack antennas.
FAQ: Do I need a high gain antenna ? You need to consider fade margins as it is wireless technology. Two main types of fading occur: Rayleigh fading, caused by multi-path, and Log-normal fading, which is produced by shadowing or signal diffraction from obstructions. Higher gain antennas will produce a more reliable result.
Speeds: GPRS: up to 114 kbps down UMTS: up to 2 Mbps down HSDPA: up to 7.2Mbps down HSPA: up to 7.2Mbps down, 2.0 Mbps up Speeds will usually be slower (depends on your ISP and Plan)
Check with your telco: You need 850 MHz antennas for Telstra city and country. You need 2.1 GHz antennas for the other telcos in the city. You need 900 MHz for Optus Yes G (3G) in country areas. Check with your network service provider for what is needed for your service area. |

10dB Coupler Combines a mobile phone and a broadband modem on one antenna. 35 dB isolation between the two devices.
Q: Why use it? A: So that the transmitter of one device does not swamp the receiver of the other device, or in the worst case damage it, and so that 50 ohms impedance is maintained. Q: Can't I just use a "T" piece, or a power divider ? A: No. You have no isolation. The full transmit power of the phone will go into the modem.
IN: antenna OUT: to broadband modem with insertion loss of approx 0.8dB C: to mobile phone, coupling loss of 10dB.
Isolation between C (phone) and OUT (modem) is 35dB.
If you have a -85dBm signal for your broadband (high speed threshold). You still have a -95dBm signal for your phone (good phone signal).
The bonus is you get 35dB isolation between the two devices though. A small reduction in the received phone signal of 10dB gives you isolation between the two devices of 35dB.
Output of a Telstra ZTE T2 Discovery 2 was measured as +16dBm (40mW) on a spectrum analyzer. This is a blue tick phone for rural use. In this case 35dB isolation gives -19dBm (40 milliwatts becomes 12 microwatts). $81.90 |
10dB Coupler Designed to combine mobile phone and broadband modem into one antenna for 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 MHz band systems. 35dB isolation between your phone and your modem.
